WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-04) co-sponsored the Defenders of Ukraine Congressional Gold Medal Act, bipartisan legislation to award the distinguished Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) to the defenders of Ukraine, in recognition of their crucial role in defense of democratic values and against Putin’s aggression.

“Thousands of Ukrainians have bravely answered the call to defend illegal and unprovoked attacks against their sovereignty at the hands of a power-hungry dictator,” said Rep. Owens. “The USA stands with the freedom-loving people of Ukraine, and I’m proud to join my colleagues in the charge to award them with the Congressional Gold Medal.”

The medal would be presented to the democratically elected government of Ukraine on behalf of the Ukrainian people.

The CGM is an award bestowed by Congress and is the highest civilian award in the United States. The decoration is awarded to an individual, or group of individuals, who perform an outstanding deed or act of service for the security, prosperity, and national interest of the United States.
