Owens Co-Sponsors Bill to Streamline Mine Permitting Process, Support Domestic Critical Mineral Supply Chains

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-04) co-sponsored the Permitting for Mining Needs (PERMIT-MN) Act, legislation to streamline the permitting process for mining projects nationwide to secure domestic mineral supply chains.

“The mining community is essential to rebuilding and strengthening our nation’s prosperity,” said Rep. Owens. “Unfortunately, the Biden administration has hampered the production of minerals and natural resources with harmful and overly broad regulatory hurdles in the permitting process. I am proud to support the PERMIT-MN Act to expedite the permitting process, unshackle the mining industry from supply chain bottlenecks, and revamp the American economy.”

The Permitting for Mining Needs Act is supported by the National Association of Building Trades Unions, the American Exploration and Mining Association, the National Mining Association, and the Uranium Producers of America.

The PERMIT-MN Act:

  • Creates certainty for miners by setting time limits on reviews and qualifying mining projects for the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council Dashboard.
  • Stops frivolous litigation by banning lawsuits filed well after the decision has been published.
  • Cuts red tape by designating a lead agency and authorizing Memorandums of Understanding between sponsors and state and local governments.
