Owens Backs Bill Against Skyrocketing College Costs
WASHINGTON – Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee Chair Burgess Owens (UT-04) helped introduce H.R. 6951, the College Cost Reduction Act, legislation that provides a comprehensive solution that will lower college costs for students and families.
“Ignoring the Constitution, Congress, and the courts, the Biden administration has continued to ‘cancel’ billions of dollars in student debt,” said Chair Owens. “Debt cannot be ‘canceled,’ merely transferred to taxpayers. Attempting to do so further exacerbates the real issue plaguing our higher education system: colleges and universities prioritizing profit over performance, eroding the value of a college degree, and burdening students with a lifetime of debt. The College Cost Reduction Act is a fiscally responsible solution to transform a broken system into one that is open, accountable, and affordable for students across the nation.”
Specifically, The College Cost and Reduction Act:
- Ensures clear, accessible, and personalized information about costs and return on investment are available to prospective students and families.
- Holds institutions financially responsible for overpriced degrees that leave students with unaffordable debt.
- Funds colleges based on student outcomes rather than excessive regulations that further increase costs to families.
