Congressman Bill Owens and the League of Women Voters announced today that they will team up this month to provide an opportunity for agriculture groups, family farmers and the general public to provide input on the next farm bill. Congress is currently scheduled to take up the next Farm Bill later this year.

“As the House Agriculture Committee continues the process of crafting the next Farm Bill, I believe it is important to hear firsthand from constituents representing local agriculture interests,” said Owens.  “I would like to thank the League of Women Voters and Clarkson University for providing a forum for constituents to voice their opinion on a wide array of agriculture issues. Our region is home to a diverse agricultural community and it is critical that the next farm bill include support for those industries.”

The mission of the League is to promote civil and informed discussion of significant public issues, and the St. Lawrence County League of Women Voters and its community partners are proud to host this meeting with Congressman Bill Owens,” said Sue Cypert, Chair of St. Lawrence County League of Women Voters. “The federal Farm Bill, which is due for renewal this year, matters greatly to our region. Government action will affect not only the prosperity of our farmers but the many people who are affected in business or personal ways by agricultural work in our region.  Many residents have questions about the quality and safety of our food.  This forum will allow North Country voices to be heard, and we thank Congressman Owens for taking part.”
