Owens Highlights Critical New York Projects in Defense Authorization

Washington, Dec 15 -

Congressman Bill Owens last night voted to support the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, legislation that contains funding for projects that are critical to Fort Drum, New York’s economic development, and national security.  The legislation passed with bipartisan support by a vote of 283-136.

“This legislation helps ensure America’s warfighters and important installations like Fort Drum have the tools to complete their mission and secure the nation,” said Owens. “It is absolutely critical that we continue to offer complete support to the men and women engaged in Afghanistan, even as America responsibly winds down the war in Iraq.  At the same time, we must ensure a community here at home that is ready to receive its returning heroes and provide the benefits they have earned.”

Owens highlighted the following projects, included in the National Defense Authorization Act, FY2012:

•    Language submitted by Owens to provide certainty to small businesses by requiring the Department of Defense to list certain products like clothing and individual equipment in its base budget.

•    Full funding for the Lightweight Counter Mortar Radar (LCMR), a system used by the Army to protect soldiers and that Owens promoted with Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY).

•    $5.7 million for the Ammo Supply Point at Fort Drum.

•    $7.6 million for a chapel at Fort Drum.

•    $15.7 million for the Fort Drum Medical Clinic.

•    $4.7 million for Dental Clinic Addition / Alteration at Fort Drum

•    $3.5 million for energy retro-commissioning of several Fort Drum buildings.

•    A 1.6 percent pay raise for the troops.

•    $3 billion to support urgent operational needs and counter-IED activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

•    Critical Army equipment like the Abrams Tank and advanced sniper rifles..
